Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society
We believe that stability begins with safety, and that every person deserves the opportunity to move toward a healthier, more secure future.
OUR APPROACH
We operate a 24/7 emergency shelter and support program that meets people where they are, while actively working to support next steps forward.
Our approach is built on:
Safety and structure within the shelter environment
Respectful, trauma-informed care
Connection to health, housing, and recovery services
Collaboration with community partners and Indigenous organizations
We recognize that homelessness is complex, and there is no single solution. Our role is to provide stability while supporting meaningful pathways forward.
Our Mission:
The Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society provides protection, care, and support to individuals in the Merritt region who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, or housing insecurity. We offer stability, security, and resources to help people rebuild their lives with dignity.
Our Vision
A community where every person has the stability, support, and opportunity to rebuild, and reimagine their future and live with hope.
Our Values:
Compassion – We meet every individual with dignity, empathy, and respect.
Transparency – We act with honesty and accountability in all we do.
Equity & Inclusion – We are committed to fairness and belonging for all, regardless of race, gender, beliefs, age or abilities.
Cultural Safety – We honour Indigenous traditions, culture-based programming, and diverse identities in every aspect of our work.
Community Mindedness – We work in partnership with the community to build trust, support, and shared solutions.
Client-Centered Care – We place the needs and voices of our clients at the heart of every decision.
Our Story
The Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society (NVSSS) is a grassroots non-profit in Merritt, BC, dedicated to supporting people facing homelessness since 2012. What began with a small group of volunteers has grown into a vital lifeline, offering a 40-bed, 24/7 shelter, meals, case management, and outreach that is always rooted in dignity and respect.
Guided by a committed Board and in partnership with BC Housing, NVSSS now operates from the former Knights Inn with 32 staff providing safe accommodations, an OPS monitoring site, and individualized support. Beyond shelter, NVSSS connects clients to healthcare, recovery programs, financial aid, housing, and Indigenous cultural supports. NVSSS offers stability, care, and hope for brighter futures.
